Supreme Court reject Hutchings appeal

Former soldier Dennis Hutchings has lost his appeal to the UK Supreme Court this morning (06.06.19).

In 2015, Hutchings was charged with the attempted murder of John Pat Cunningham in Benburb, Co Tyrone, in 1974, and with attempting to cause him grievous bodily harm.

On 20 April 2016, the Director of Public Prosecutions issued a certificate pursuant to section 1 of the Justice and Security (Northern Ireland) Act 2007 directing that Hutchings stand trial by a judge sitting without a jury. This was unsuccessfully challenged by way of judicial review in the Divisional Court, and then again to the Supreme Court which today rejected his appeal.
