The Passing of Monsignor Raymond Murray
A Colossus in the Field of Human Rights25 February 2025
The Pat Finucane Centre and Justice For the Forgotten mark the passing of Monsignor Raymond Murray
We in PFC and JFF mourn the loss of Monsignor Raymond Murray, a true colossus in the field of human rights in Ireland. We have engaged with him extensively over the years. Right from the start of the conflict he was a fearless and tireless human rights advocate who, together with Fr. Denis Faul, documented systematically abuses by the British State. He was called upon to intercede at all hours of the night by distressed parents whose children had been taken into custody by the British Army. He was truly a voice for the voiceless. He was instrumental in the Irish Government taking a case against the British Government to European Commission of Human Rights (ECHR) in 1971 for their torture of detainees. He was the author of three books, including The SAS in Ireland and, along with Fr. Faul, wrote numerous pamphlets on human rights abuses, including plastic bullets, collusion and shoot-to-kill cases. Ní bheidh a leithéad arís ann. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
