The HET has recently discovered a document from the archives if the 1st Battalion, The parachute Regiment entitled 'Standing Operating Procedures for internal security duties in Northern Ireland'. Standing operation number four specifically deals with 'orders for opening fire by individuals'.
It states
"If there is an officer or NCO present, he will tell you when to open fire. You must obey his orders. This SOP is concerned with when there is no officer or NCO present and you are on your own (eg sentry) or part of, for example, a two man patrol. You will then have to act on your own initative".
